Prague

Velka Pardubicka Steeplechase

Prague, this wonderful city combines culture, history and gastronomy, making it a destination not to miss!  It is also our base for the weekend of the famous Velka Pardubicka Steeplechase.   The former capital of the Holy Roman Empire was a flourishing merchant city and still has the vast monuments to prove its power and expose its elegance. Saint Vitus Cathedral, the finest and oldest example of gothic architecture in Eastern Europe, along with the Charles Bridge, the old town centre with its cobbled streets flanked with stylish, aristocratic edifices are all waiting to be discovered. The harmony of these buildings in the delightful squares is a real pleasure for all to admire, not forgetting the numerous restaurants who offer extensive menus of all the traditional dishes. One cannot leave Prague before indulging in a portion of Goulash!

100 kilometres east of Prague, in eastern Bohemia, is Pardubice where the  Velka Pardubicka Steeplechase was run for the first time in 1874.  Run on the second Sunday of October, the Pardubicka is considered to be one of the toughest steeplechases in Europe, run over 4 miles and 2 furlongs with 31 fences, including the famous Taxi fence.  Local legend, jockey and trainer Josef Vana won in 2009 on Tiumen at the age of 57.  Many British trainers have entered their horses in this race, a real test for endurance, as Charlie Mann will confirm when he entered “Its a Snip”
